SJI International Elementary School is seeking an inspiring, enthusiastic, and energetic Head of Music to lead our Music department and encourage our students to be involved in musical activities through the curriculum and extracurricular programmes. This leadership position will begin in January 2027. The successful candidate will have proven experience teaching music to students between 4 and 12 years of age, alongside a strong track record of leading performances, ensembles, and school-wide musical events.
His/her background would be in international schools where a wide range of musical genres and instruments have been taught. He/she would also need to be committed to driving the Music Programme through the CCA and Instrumental Music Programme. As a department head, the successful candidate will manage planning and teaching time effectively, collaborate closely with school leadership on curriculum development, and show flexibility and creativity. The successful candidate should also understand and support the school's identity and values as a Catholic Lasallian school, although they may not be of the same faith themselves.

Primary Responsibility:
To ensure high quality music learning outcomes for children by providing teaching and learning best practices within the framework of the school’s Mission, Vision, Core Values, Culture, and the International Primary Curriculum.
Specific Responsibilities:
Leadership:
- Oversee and supervising the growth and development of the Music Department ensuring a balanced experience for pupils in all aspects of the music activities available
- Organise and plan the music timetable to include elite opportunities, co-curricular and practice sessions and clubs
- Write and amend Department policy documents
- Undertake reviews of the Department’s performance
- Line manage music peripatetic staff and oversee the provision of peripatetic music lessons
- Propose events and dates on the school calendar
- Organise and oversee all musical events
- Liaise with the School Administration to provide music for whole school assemblies and services.
- Attend Middle Leaders meetings
- Organise the highest standard of training for staff within the Department in order that they keep abreast of contemporary thinking in music and other educational issues
- Be responsible for the development of all aspects of music, to build a development plan for the department in consultation with the Senior Leadership Team.
- Identify resources needed to meet the needs of pupils and advise the Principal of priorities for expenditure
- Foster and develop a musical learning community across the whole school, building buy in from parents and other key stakeholders
Teaching and Learning:
- Create and develop challenging and innovative schemes of work which are inspiring for learners and ensure full curriculum coverage, continuity and progression for all pupils
- Provide enhanced performance opportunities for pupils of all musical abilities
- Establish and implement clear policies and practices for assessing, recording and reporting on pupil achievement
- Evaluate the teaching of the subject and using this analysis to identify good practice and areas for improvement
- Develop the use of ICT in the teaching and learning of music
- Oversee assessment and reporting. Produce periodic assessments with marks schemes. Ensure assessments are moderated internally
- Encourage and develop cross-curricular links with a range of other departments
- Attend consultation evenings and keep parents informed about their child's progress

- Be an advocate of the school and its decisions during interactions with students, staff, and the community.
- Lead in nurturing a Lasallian Catholic ethos by building upon the legacy and tradition of the school firmly anchored in Faith, Service, Community, Excellence and Respect.
- Maintain good working relationships with colleagues and students.
- Be a role model within the school in terms of professional expertise and conduct and lead by example.
- Treat others fairly and with respect in order to create and maintain a positive school culture.
- Build a collaborative learning culture within the school and manage innovation and change.
- Take on specific tasks related to the day-to-day administration and organisation of the school as requested by the Principal or SLT.
- Report any matters related to Health and Safety, discipline or personal concerns to the HoD.
- Report any child safeguarding matters to the designated safeguarding team.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Music, Education or a related field, plus teaching qualification
- 3+ years school-based experience (5+ preferred).
- Experience teaching students aged 4-12 preferred.
- Proficiency in piano to be able to accompany students
- Proven experience of leading Orchestra and Music Ensembles
Preferred
- Leadership experience as Head of Music Department
