Job Description - Lecturer

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) is a young, research-intensive university that is ranked among the top in the world.

The School of Humanities (SoH) at NTU Singapore combines the highest quality research and teaching with practical engagement with the world. The School is committed to disciplinary excellence and interdisciplinary innovation, with a particular focus on Digital Humanities, Medical Humanities, Environmental Humanities and the study of Global Asia.

The Language and Communication Centre (LCC) in SoH offers communication courses to undergraduate and graduate students across the university. Specifically, we teach a first-year communication course, CC0001 Inquiry & Communication in an Interdisciplinary World, which, through scaffolded activities and writing exercises, takes students through the writing process, cultivating habits of thinking that will serve students throughout their four years at university and beyond. We also teach the upper-level discipline specific communication courses for engineering, the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. For all our compulsory communication courses, we emphasise writing as a tool for thinking, student feedback literacy, and rhetorical awareness.

The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) invites applications for the position of two Lecturers in LCC at the School of Humanities (SoH).

Successful candidates are expected to teach academic writing and communication courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and to contribute to curriculum design and coordination of courses. As we teach over 11,000 students compulsory classes each academic year, LCC prides itself on its excellent teaching evaluations and innovative teaching practices. Moreover, faculty serve on committees in LCC, improving the functioning and profile of the centre. Many faculty also contribute to NTU’s writing centre, The CommCube and serve the wider university through leadership positions. Lastly, faculty are expected to keep active in their research, applying for grants when relevant, sharing research at conferences, and publishing articles periodically. Faculty also attend professional development activities such as LCC Sharing Sessions, LCC Speaker Series, and pre-semester briefings for their specific courses.

Faculty are expected to teach 12 hours per week. They also:

contribute to the running of LCC by coordinating courses, designing curriclum, and serving on committees. actively research in fields related to pedagogy, education, writing studies, literature or linguistics. enhance teaching practices through research, peer observation, technological innovation, and professional development.

Candidates who have the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:

  • PhD in Applied Linguistics, English for Academic Purposes, Linguistics, Education, Literature, or Rhetoric and Composition

  • Degrees in the Sciences and Engineering will be considered if the candidate can show evidence of research in disciplinary communication skills

  • Experience in teaching academic and/or discipline-specific writing

  • Interest in new media and digital literacy is a plus

  • An active research agenda
