Job Description - Applied Physics Systems Developer

Role description

You are a multi-faceted Applied Physics system developer, preferably with experience in advanced sensors, custom optics, and miniaturised electronics, robotics, signal processing and data analysis. You are comfortable in translating a wide variety of technical commercial challenges in the area of automation, vision systems or robotics all the way through from requirement capture, concept generation, technical de-risking, proof-of-concept, through to validation and quality control and work with multi-disciplinary teams of technical experts across the globe to deliver bespoke tangible break-through solutions. You are known as a problem solver and a team player with excellent communication skills; our clients buy our services when they understand what we can do and how it adds value to their business, and our teams perform best under inspirational leaders. You will have a thirst for solving problems, a desire to push technology to its limits, and a creative and collaborative mindset.

What you bring

Your experience should include designing and developing multi-disciplinary systems, approaches for a variety of applications and providing technical leadership to teams of engineers across the globe. You can work and communicate across both technical and commercial teams, bridging commercial engagement with technical delivery, supporting BDs and PMs in writing proposals and statements of work, and joining in client meetings, taking on technical questions and simplifying complex challenges. It would be beneficial if you also have deep expertise in at least one adjacent area, such as physics, mathematics, electronics, etc.

You will:

  • Work with clients to understand their needs, communicate how our team can help them and design a system that delights them
  • Support sales by helping clients identify high value opportunities through participation in sales meetings, planning projects and writing proposals 
  • Be a subject matter expert in physical sciences with experience in systems engineering
  • Lead diverse multi-disciplinary teams, working collaboratively to bring the chosen approach to reality
  • Use professional software engineering tools and processes, which are flexible enough to fit our wide range of projects and help us ensure that our deliverables are high quality; and contribute to the ongoing improvement of these to keep us at the cutting edge of best practice
  • be exposed to a broad range of elements from purely theoretical work to the conception, design, build and testing of hardware in our laboratories

Many of the systems you will be working on will include electronics, optics, fluidics, robotics and UI components thus requiring an all-round engineering knowledge, attention to detail and good team working skills.
Each project is different, and you will get involved at all stages of the product development lifecycle.

As a Principal Engineer, we would expect you to be involved in multiple projects simultaneously, taking responsibility for the delivery of the assigned task while following a rigorous approach appropriate to a regulated industry.

We work using industry best practices, including continuous integration, test-driven development and model-based system engineering.

There are many other aspects to the work in addition to design and development, including the participation in work estimation, the presentation of results to clients or the participation in concept-generation sessions.

Type of work undertaken

Cambridge Consultants’ core expertise is in innovative product development. We also undertake technology consultancy projects - from road mapping the future of a technology, through to risk mitigation and product launch.

Our clients in the APAC region are some of the world’s biggest brands and most ambitious technology start-up ventures across a wide range of markets, from aerospace to mining, consumer to industry, communications to healthcare.

The work we do is throughout the whole product development cycle, from product strategy and front-end concept generation, through technical feasibility and detailed design to transferring the idea to manufacture.

The reason our clients come to us is because we are able to create unique systems that make a step change in performance, where technical innovation is the only way to achieve their commercial goals.

The projectteams that deliver our work are typically based in in Cambridge, UK or Singapore offices (or a combination of both), with the multi-office teams working collaboratively on a common goal for our client.

Required knowledge and skills

To meet the requirements of this role you will:

  • Have an excellent degree in Physics, Mathematics or engineering with strong technical skills. Key strengths in practical application of the sciences are essential.
  • Have significant experience in programming, sensing, statistics and data, modelling etc
  • Be an enthusiastic team player. Good communication skills are essential as a major part of your role will be interacting with clients andmulti-disciplinary global project teams made up of scientists, engineers and designers

Preferable knowledge and skills

In addition, any experience of the following would be advantageous:

  • Experience with advanced sensors, and/or miniaturised electronics
  • Experience in quantum optics, custom optics, computational optics, optoelectronics / photonics
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, acoustics, and lab automation
  • Experience with product development in a regulated industry (such as medical, space or defence)
