Job Description - Commissioning Engineer (Electrical Focus)

Job Purpose

The Commissioning Engineer (Electrical Focus) is responsible for planning, coordinating, executing, and documenting the commissioning of shipboard electrical and electronic systems throughout construction, testing, harbour acceptance, and final delivery phases. The role ensures that systems are tested, validated, and handed over in accordance with project specifications, quality requirements, safety standards, and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute commissioning activities for shipboard electrical and electronic systems from initial energization through final acceptance testing.
  • Develop, review, and implement commissioning procedures, test plans, and inspection checklists for electrical equipment and systems.
  • Conduct commissioning activities for electrical power generation, distribution systems, switchboards, transformers, motors, lighting systems, navigation equipment, communication systems, alarm systems, and monitoring systems.
  • Perform step-by-step energization, functional testing, load testing, protection relay testing, control system verification, and automation system checks.
  • Troubleshoot electrical faults, grounding issues, equipment malfunctions, system integration issues, and communication network problems.
  • Support testing, integration, and verification of vessel automation, monitoring, control, and platform management systems.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with engineering, production, quality assurance, subcontractors, equipment manufacturers, clients, and project stakeholders.
  • Participate in harbour acceptance tests, dockside trials, sea trials, and system performance verification activities.
  • Monitor commissioning progress and ensure timely resolution of identified deficiencies, punch-list items, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare and maintain commissioning reports, test records, inspection documentation, deviation reports, and handover dossiers.
  • Support system handover activities by ensuring all documentation, test records, and acceptance requirements are completed.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations, project requirements, quality standards, and company procedures.

Requirements

Education

  • Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Marine Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

Experience

  • Experience in commissioning, testing, installation, maintenance, or operation of electrical and electronic systems.
  • Experience within shipbuilding, offshore, marine, power generation, industrial plant, automation, or heavy engineering environments.
  • Experience with electrical power systems, switchboards, generators, automation systems, control systems, or marine electronics will be an advantage.
  • Experience supporting vessel commissioning, harbour trials, sea trials, or system integration activities will be an advantage.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of electrical power generation and distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with commissioning methodologies, testing procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and system verification processes.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, control logic diagrams, technical manuals, and engineering documentation.
  • Understanding of electrical protection systems, automation systems, instrumentation, communication networks, and monitoring systems.
  • Knowledge of fault-finding techniques and root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Proficiency in preparing commissioning procedures, test reports, technical documentation, and handover records.
  • Experience using electrical testing and diagnostic equipment will be an advantage.
