Job Description - Senior Equipment Engineer (Implant)

The successful candidate is a strong contributor who partners closely with Process Integration, Equipment, Manufacturing, Quality, and Technology Development teams to drive tool qualification, process optimization, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement. This role requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to deliver practical, sustainable solutions that support fab readiness and operational performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own implant equipment performance, process stability, and manufacturability in a high-volume production environment.
  • Lead troubleshooting for process excursions, equipment drift, dose and energy issues, beam instability, contamination, and yield detractors.
  • Support process tuning, recipe optimization, and equipment qualification for ion implantation processes.
  • Drive root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to improve tool availability, process capability, product quality, and yield.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support technology transfer, tool readiness, and process ramp-up.
  • Monitor and improve key equipment and process metrics using statistical process control (SPC), design of experiments (DOE), failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), fault detection and control (FDC), and statistical data analysis.
  • Work with equipment and maintenance teams to strengthen preventive maintenance, calibration, and tool performance standards.
  • Develop, review, and maintain technical documentation including SOPs, BKMs, qualification reports, and process guidelines.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, and contribute to knowledge sharing across the organization.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in ion implantation and semiconductor equipment.
  • Support the start-up and relocation of implanter tools.

Technical Qualifications

  • Have strong expertise in ion implantation tools and processes for semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Senior-level experience with Axcelis/AMAT implant tools is required, including tool setup and operation, process tuning, beam and implant parameter optimization, machine matching and qualification, and troubleshooting/process correction.
  • Demonstrated expertise in equipment troubleshooting, process stabilization, and defect reduction.
  • Solid understanding of process integration, yield improvement, and defect analysis in semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with metrology tools and methods relevant to implant processes, such as sheet resistance measurement, SIMS, four-point probe, ellipsometry or thickness monitoring where applicable, and particle monitoring and contamination control.
  • Strong skills in DOE, SPC, FMEA, FDC, data analysis, and root cause investigation.
  • Experience supporting technology transfer from development to manufacturing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly to stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with fab safety, quality systems, documentation standards, and compliance requirements.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in semiconductor high-volume manufacturing or a technology transfer environment is highly preferred.
  • A strong background in implant equipment ownership and process support, with a demonstrated ability to lead or contribute to cross-functional problem-solving teams.
  • A proven track record of improving uptime, matching, repeatability, contamination control, and process capability will be considered an advantage.
  • Experience driving technical contributions through innovation, patents, and impactful fab improvements is also desirable.
  • Exposure to ISO systems, operational excellence frameworks, and equipment maintenance practices would be beneficial.

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in materials science, electronic, electrical, or mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, or a closely related discipline is required.
  • 10 to 15 years of experience in implant process or equipment development, preferably within semiconductor manufacturing, able to do start-up and relocation of Implanter tool.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, multifunctional fab environment, with a strong record of technical ownership, collaboration, and execution excellence.
