Job Description - Tanker Operator (Fuel Oil)

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of tanker voyages carrying fuel oil, refined products, and petroleum cargoes.
  • Coordinate with charterers, traders, vessel owners, brokers, terminals, agents, and surveyors to ensure smooth voyage execution.
  • Monitor vessel movements and ensure compliance with loading, discharge, and voyage instructions.
  • Nominate vessels and coordinate port calls, berthing schedules, terminal requirements, and cargo operations.
  • Prepare and issue voyage instructions to Masters and vessel operators.
  • Track cargo loading and discharge progress, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and operational requirements.
  • Liaise with ship agents to arrange port clearances, customs documentation, bunker supplies, and husbandry services.
  • Monitor vessel performance, port turnaround times, cargo quantities, and operational costs.
  • Calculate and monitor laytime, demurrage, detention, and freight-related costs.
  • Verify Statements of Facts (SOF), Notices of Readiness (NOR), pumping logs, and other operational documents.
  • Resolve operational issues such as delays, cargo shortages, contamination claims, off-spec cargoes, and berth congestion.
  • Coordinate closely with traders and chartering teams regarding vessel schedules, cargo positioning, and market opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate voyage records and ensure timely reporting to internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, vetting requirements, sanctions regulations, and company policies.
  • Monitor weather conditions, port restrictions, and geopolitical developments that may impact vessel operations.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping, Logistics, Supply Chain, Business, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of tanker operations experience within oil majors, trading houses, shipowners, or tanker operators.
  • Strong understanding of tanker operations, voyage management, and petroleum cargo handling.
  • Familiarity with fuel oil, crude oil, clean petroleum products (CPP), or dirty petroleum products (DPP) trades.
  • Good knowledge of charter parties, voyage calculations, laytime, demurrage, and tanker operational practices.
  • Experience coordinating with terminals, vessel owners, charterers, and shipping agents.
  • Knowledge of tanker vetting requirements, maritime regulations, and industry standards.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple voyages simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and shipping/trading systems.
