Job Description - Electrochemical Researcher

Overview

NEU Battery Materials aims to be the largest, cleanest, and most neutral source of recycled lithium globally. The firm developed the world’s first patented electrochemical redox recycling method that only uses electricity and water. This revolutionary approach is paving the way for a more sustainable future in LFP battery recycling.

This role is about figuring things out. You’ll spend your time understanding the current state of our technology, identifying what we don’t yet know, and using a combination of your technical background and genuine curiosity to come up with ideas worth testing. Then you’ll run those experiments, interpret the results, and work toward solutions that are designed from the start to translate to commercial scale.

The scope spans electrolyzer development, electrode and electrocatalyst work, impurity removal, electrolyte behaviour, mass and water balances, and broader chemical and electrochemical challenges as they arise. Some problems will be clearly defined. Others you’ll need to frame yourself. You’ll work closely with the Engineering Team.

If you enjoy research and the above sounds like you, click "Apply" below or send your resume to [email protected]

What You’ll Work On

  • Design and execute experiments to develop and optimise our electrolyzer systems, including electrode fabrication, electrocatalyst development and cell characterisation
  • Investigate and resolve process challenges: impurity behaviour, electrolyte stability, mass and water balances across the system
  • Set up proof-of-concept (POC) experiments for new process ideas and take promising ones through iterative development cycles toward scale-up
  • Perform electrochemical analysis (EIS, voltammetry, Tafel analysis) and wet chemical characterisation; interpret results and draw actionable conclusions
  • Support pilot and process engineering work by translating bench findings into parameters that matter at scale
  • Contribute to grant proposals, patent filings and internal technical documentation as needed

Requirements

  • PhD or MS/BS with strong hands-on research experience in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related field
  • 3–5 years of experimental research experience in electrochemistry or closely related systems
  • Solid grounding in electrochemical fundamentals: thermodynamics, kinetics, mass transport, electrode processes
  • Practical experience with electrochemical characterisation techniques - EIS, cyclic voltammetry, impedance analysis and holistic data interpretation
  • Track record of taking experiments from concept through execution and subsequently through conclusions, and owning the outcomes

Technical advantage

  • Experience with alkaline electrolyzer systems or related electrochemical devices (fuel cells and redox flow batteries)
  • Familiarity with ion exchange membranes, corrosion-resistant materials, or trace metal separation/purification
  • Modelling or simulation experience: COMSOL, DFT, Python/MATLAB for kinetic or process modelling
  • Awareness of relevant safety and environmental standards (ISO, lab-scale chemical handling)

Who We’re Looking For

Beyond the technical requirements, the person who’ll do well here is genuinely curious. Not just about their specific area, but about the broader system and how things connect. You’re self-driven enough to identify what needs investigating without being told, and motivated enough to go deeper when the first answer doesn’t fully hold up.

You are also someone who can wear different hats. That might mean stepping outside your immediate scope to help unblock a problem, communicating your findings clearly to people with different backgrounds, or collaborating with engineers on questions that sit at the boundary of research and scale-up. We’re a lean team where that kind of range matters.

If you’ve spent your career executing well-defined protocols and prefer it that way, this probably isn’t the right fit. If you’ve thrived when given a problem and the freedom to figure out how to approach it, we’d like to hear from you.
