General Manager for Physical Commodity Trading Firm

Lead and scale physical commodity trading business based in Singapore witting within an established regional conglomerate and you will be responsible for driving growth, strengthening trading capabilities, and building a high-performing platform across regional and international markets.

The successful candidate will combine strong trading acumen with leadership experience, bringing a hands-on approach to developing markets, optimizing operations, and delivering sustainable profitability.

Key Responsibilities

Business Leadership & Strategy

1. Define and execute the strategic roadmap to scale the physical commodity trading business in Asia and beyond
2. Identify new market opportunities, trade flows, and expansion strategies across geographies and products
3. Align business objectives with the broader group’s vision, leveraging the conglomerate’s assets and network

Commercial & Trading Oversight

1. Oversee end-to-end physical trading activities including sourcing, logistics, risk management, and sales
2. Drive P&L performance, ensuring disciplined trading strategies and margin optimization
3. Monitor market trends, pricing dynamics, and global supply-demand fundamentals to inform trading decisions
4. Build and maintain strong relationships with producers, suppliers, clients, and intermediaries

Platform Build & Scale

1. Strengthen operational infrastructure including logistics, contract management, and trade finance processes
2. Develop scalable systems, controls, and governance frameworks to support growth
3. Collaborate with internal stakeholders (risk, finance, legal, compliance) to ensure robust processes

Team Leadership & Development

1. Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing trading and operations team
2. Foster a performance-driven, entrepreneurial, and accountable culture
3. Attract and retain top talent within the commodity trading space

Risk Management & Governance

1. Establish and enforce risk management frameworks across trading, credit, and operations
2. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies
3. Maintain strong oversight on counterparty risk and exposure

Requirements

1. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field (MBA preferred)
2. 12–20+ years of experience in physical commodity trading, with proven P&L ownership
3. Track record with a top tier physical commodity trading firm is a must (preferably in Soft Commodity)
4. Deep understanding of supply chains, logistics, and trade finance within commodities
5. Established network across producers, buyers, and market participants
6. Demonstrated leadership experience managing cross-functional teams
7. Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to operate both strategically and hands-on
