Job Description - Learning Specialist (TOUCH Young Arrows)

Job Summary

Children from vulnerable family backgrounds often face environmental barriers that lead to learning gaps, causing them to progress as slower learners. As our Learning Specialist, you will be the strategic architect behind our English language intervention.

Reporting directly to the Head of TYA, you will design robust literacy curricula and build practical resources and strategies. Your primary mission is to equip and empower our community of volunteer mentors, giving them the tools and confidence they need to establish a strong, lasting foundation in English literacy for children aged 5 to 14.

Responsibilities:

1. Curriculum Design & Resource Development (English Literacy)

  • Contextualized Learning: Design, source, and adapt an evidence-based English literacy curriculum tailored specifically for pre-schoolers and primary-school-aged children who are slower learners.
  • Resource Creation: Develop highly practical, easy-to-use teaching toolkits, literacy games, and guided reading resources that translate complex pedagogical theories into actionable community-based lessons.
  • Holistic Integration: Align literacy building with character values and social-emotional learning, ensuring lessons reduce learning gaps while boosting children's confidence.
  • Impact Measurement: Establish frameworks to monitor, evaluate, and measure the long-term effectiveness of the literacy program on student outcomes. .

2. Volunteer Training & Capability Building

  • Mentor Enablement: Conduct training sessions and workshops to equip volunteer mentors with effective decoding, phonics, reading, and engagement strategies.
  • Delivery Systems: Establish clear systems and feedback loops to ensure volunteers can deliver the curriculum consistently and effectively, even without formal teaching backgrounds.
  • Advisory Support: Act as the internal consultant and subject matter expert for the TYA team and volunteers when navigating complex learning needs.

3. Strategic Partnerships & Advocacy

  • External Collaborations: Build and maintain strategic relationships with educational funders, external literacy providers, academic groups, and corporate partners to scale enrichment opportunities.
  • Research Insights: Stay abreast of the latest research in learner motivation, cognitive development, and 21st-century competencies to continuously innovate TYA’s educational model.

4. Others

  • Manage essential data reporting, general administration and documentation.
  • Render support to broader corporate activities and cross-departmental duties as required.

Working Conditions

  • 5-day work week: Tue to Sat, 9am to 6pm
  • Location - Toa Payoh / Various location around Singapore

Requirements

  • Teaching Background: 5 to 8 years (or more) of related work experience, with a strong preference for past MOE-based teaching and English curriculum design in the primary school age range.
  • Community Adaptability: Proven track record or strong desire to work within community settings; adaptable to the unique realities of vulnerable families.
  • Pedagogical Knowledge: Deep understanding of learner motivation, cognitive/affective theories, and 21st-century competency frameworks.
  • Communication & Influence: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; able to inspire volunteers and command pedagogical authority while remaining approachable.
  • Interpersonal Savvy: A compassionate team player who is entirely comfortable engaging with children, caregivers, and diverse corporate or volunteer groups.
  • Autonomy: A disciplined self-starter who can contribute, innovate, and influence independently within a dynamic environment.
  • Digital Literacy: Adept at Microsoft Office suite for resource creation and reporting.
