Medical Technologist I

Job Responsibilities

1.                Determine the acceptability of samples with guidelines and prepares specimens for analysis.

2.                Perform the laboratory tests as stated in the standard procedure manual.

3.                Co-ordinate general workflow and prioritize laboratory requests according to Stat, Urgent and routine.

4.                Operate and calibrate all laboratory instruments.

5.                Perform daily maintenance on laboratory instruments.

6.                Perform quality control (QC) procedures, verify that values are within specified limits, and document all QC data.

7.                Validate the accuracy of laboratory data.

8.                Monitor quality control and quality assurance measures and institute corrective action.

9.                Has knowledge of theory of laboratory procedures and understand the basic physiology of laboratory results and to correlate laboratory data with other clinical data.

10.             Identify technical, instrument, and/ or physiologic causes of unexpected test results.

11.             Detect malfunctioning of laboratory equipment & troubleshoot basic instrument problems with established parameters.

12.             Ensure quality and timeliness of patient test results by investigating problems involving pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes.

13.             Monitor, evaluate and circulate quality control statistics to assess accuracy, reproducibility and validity of current laboratory methods.

14.             Ensure the laboratory tests are performed according to standard test procedures.

15.                Ensure all abnormally high / low results or unacceptable specimens are notified and documented in the Laboratory Information System (LIS). 

16.                Evaluate, validate and recommend new methodologies and new testing equipment.

17.                Perform new procedures as directed. 

18.                Train and supervise medical technologists and provide leadership for development of the profession.

19.                Perform specimen collection (finger prick only).

20.                Receive samples and verify patient particulars on request forms to correspond with specimen labels.

21.                Respond to request for special and unusual tests. 

22.                Comply and enforce safety regulations.

23.                Maintain strict confidentiality and security of patient records and test results.

24.                Perform analytical and decision making functions.

25.                Interact with other staff to solve problems and interpret patient laboratory result within the framework of the medical technology.

26.                Contribute to resolution of conflicting decisions/interpretations within the laboratory.

27.                Apply step-by-step problem solving and critical thinking patterns.

28.             Recommend and implement changes in response to technology and laboratory procedures.

29.             Ensure proper storage of laboratory specimens.

30.             Monitor laboratory stock inventory and to requisite reagents and/ or consumables (only authorised technologist).

31.             Develop safety and waste management procedures.

32.             Participate in continuing education and responsible for own professional development.

Job Requirements

1.                Diploma in Medical Technology / DQE or Bachelor of Science (Medical Science) with minimum 5 years’ relevant experience.

2.                An effective team leader with good interpersonal and communication skills.

3.                Show initiative and be adaptive to changes.

4.                Able to work with all level of staff in a fast-paced environment.
