Job Description - Project Officer (Two-Phase Cooling)

The School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) is a robust, dynamic and multi-disciplinary international research community comprising of world-class scientists and bright students. We are looking for a Project Officer to support the research on two-phase cooling. The position focuses on the development of advanced two-phase cooling technologies for high heat flux applications, including flow boiling and spray cooling. The candidate will perform numerical modelling and simulation of two-phase heat transfer and fluid flow, and contribute to the design and optimization of integrated cooling systems with enhanced thermal performance.

In addition, the candidate will be responsible for system-level design, as well as the design, fabrication, and experimental testing of two-phase cooling devices, including microstructured surfaces, nozzle systems and cooling modules. These components will be developed using both conventional and advanced manufacturing techniques such as additive manufacturing.

The outcomes of this work will support a research project led by the Principal Investigator, aimed at developing high-performance thermal management solutions for next-generation electronic and energy systems. The project will deliver impactful innovations that address industry needs while enhancing the research reputation of the University.

Key Responsibilities:

The candidate will conduct both numerical and experimental research in the development of advanced two-phase cooling technologies for high heat flux applications, including flow boiling and spray cooling. The key responsibilities and job scope are:

  • development of thermal optimization strategies and design methodologies for two-phase cooling systems, including flow boiling channels and spray cooling configurations,

  • perform numerical simulations to investigate two-phase heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics, including phase change, interfacial effects, and thermal performance limits,

  • design and develop system-level two-phase cooling solutions, including fluid selection, flow loop configuration, and integration with high heat flux devices,

  • generate designs for the fabrication of two-phase cooling devices (e.g., microstructured surfaces, cold plates, spray modules) using conventional and advanced manufacturing techniques,

  • conduct experimental investigations on flow boiling and spray cooling to evaluate heat transfer performance, critical heat flux, and system reliability,

  • work closely with other graduate students and researchers on coupled experimental and numerical studies,

  • assist in the preparation of research reports, journal publications, and technical documentation, and

  • collaborate with researchers, graduate and undergraduate students involved in related research projects (e.g., URECA or final year projects).

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field,

  • Basic knowledge of heat transfer and fluid mechanics, with exposure to two-phase flow, boiling heat transfer, or thermal systems being an advantage,

  • Familiarity with numerical simulation tools (e.g., CFD) and/or analytical methods for thermal-fluid analysis,

  • Experience or interest in experimental work, including thermal measurements and data acquisition,

  • Understanding of two-phase cooling concepts such as flow boiling, spray cooling, or high heat flux thermal management is preferred,

  • Exposure to design and fabrication processes, including conventional or advanced manufacturing (e.g., additive manufacturing), is an advantage,

  • Ability to assist in system-level design and integration of thermal management solutions,

  • Good teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a research environment, and

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English for research work.
