Job Description - Research Analyst / Analyst

As the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, EIU helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over two hundred countries.


The Country Analysis division of EIU is seeking to recruit a Research Analyst or Analyst, Asia – dependent on experience. We are looking for someone with a good understanding of macroeconomics and strong writing and analytical skills. The analyst will likely focus on economies in ASEAN and Oceania, although will also feed into the wider team coverage of Asia-Pacific. A proven interest in countries or sub-regions in Asia is desirable. The analyst will produce economic and political forecasts for specific countries in the region and write analysis on economic, political and policy developments. They will join a team of analysts working on the region and report to the Principal Economist, Asia.


How you will contribute


Produce and contribute to high-quality forecasts and analysis:



  • Produce economic and political forecasts for selected countries in Asia and lead EIU’s thinking and views on these countries 

  • Produce data- and graphic-rich research notes and analysis that identify important trends and developments in economics and politics, and highlight real-world implications for EIU clients 

  • Provide feedback to others on their work and show an ability to critically evaluate their forecasts  

  • Ensure all output meets EIU standards and produced according to editorial deadlines, as well as directed at the needs of clients


Manage external contributors: 



  • Be responsible for finding and commissioning suitable external contributors to provide written and data analysis of politics and economics within the countries of responsibility

  • Carry out comprehensive edits and checks on contributors’ input, ensuring accuracy presentation in accordance with EIU style guide and product guidelines

  • Build a network of sources in academia, business and government to draw on for research purpose


Contribute to the team:



  • Play an active role and collaborate in team discussions on global and regional themes and the development of the regional view on Asia and its sub-regions

  • Support and collaborate with other members of the team when they need it


Support promotion of views externally:



  • Support engagement with clients through participating in meetings

  • Work collaboratively with EIU sales colleagues to support new business development

  • Share views with media bodies such as television, radio or newspapers on behalf of the EIU


The ideal skills for this role are:



  • Knowledge and interest in economics and politics in one or more Asian countries or sub-regions

  • Relevant degree in economics, political science or related subject. Ideally a Masters degree (or equivalent)

  • Strong writing and editing skills, and an ability to write well under time pressure

  • Knowledge of analysing economic and policy trends, and comfort in working with datasets 

  • Fluent written and oral communication skills in English (fluency in relevant regional languages is a strong plus) 

  • Strong knowledge in MS Office, especially Excel and Powerpoint; experience with data terminals and forecasting software is desirable

  • The ability to juggle different tasks effectively

  • A knack for placing clients first and maintaining a commercial focus


You will be able to demonstrate:



  • Knowledge of Asia’s economic and political environment

  • Attention to detail and ability to ensure consistent high quality products and services

  • Strong interest and analytical rigour in issues covering economics and policy as well as awareness of client demand
