Job Description - Research Assistant (Environmental Sciences)

The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University is a world-class interdisciplinary school in environmental research with a strong focus on Asian environmental challenges. The ASE integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability. For more details, please view https://www.ntu.edu.sg/ase.

The Wetland Carbon Lab at NTU’s Asian School of the Environment (ASE) focuses on understanding the role of aquatic ecosystems, including mangroves peatlands, and streams, as nature based solutions. The lab integrates field-based experiments, high-frequency sensor networks, stable isotope approaches, and modelling to study water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus fluxes and greenhouse gas emissions across watersheds.

We are seeking a highly motivated, independent, and adventurous Research Assistant to get involved in watershed-scale biogeochemistry monitoring and research across Singapore’s urban-to-nature stream networks. The position supports NTU’s mission to advance solution-oriented environmental research and contributes to sustainable urban planning, water quality management, climate mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design, installation, and operation of long-term and mobile aquatic monitoring stations across forest, urban park, and built-up stream catchments in Singapore.

  • Support watershed-scale field campaigns to quantify water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus fluxes along an urban-to-nature gradient.

  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate high-frequency in situ sensors measuring hydrodynamics and aquatic biogeochemical properties.

  • Contribute to the application of mass balance models and stable isotope approaches to assess lateral inputs, in-stream biogeochemical processes, and greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Assist with the management, processing, and analysis of large high-frequency datasets, ensuring appropriate quality control and documentation.

  • Maintain and organise field and laboratory equipment inventory, oversee storage space organisation (including data storage systems), and support procurement of equipment and consumables.

  • Contribute to the preparation of peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and scientific presentations, and support project reporting and dissemination.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Geography, Hydrology, Ecology or a related field.

  • Experience in fieldwork, data collection, laboratory work, and basic data analysis. Experience supporting field projects is an advantage.

  • Ability and interest to conduct fieldwork in outdoor and potentially challenging environments.

  • Adaptable to changing field conditions, schedules, and project needs.

  • Good written and oral communication skills, with the ability to contribute to reports, presentations, and project documentation.

  • Proactive, reliable, and well-organised, with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrates a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

  • Able to identify issues proactively and proposing practical solutions (e.g., troubleshooting field equipment, improving data management processes, or flagging data quality concerns)

We seek a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
