Research Assistant (Natural Sciences and Science Education Department) [NIE]

The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on an 18-month contract at the Natural Sciences and Science Education Department.

Project Title: Development of real-time nano-sensors for micronutrient monitoring in hydroponics systems

Project Introduction: This project focuses on the development of optical sensors for micronutrient detection in hydroponic and aqueous systems. The work involves polymer-based fluorescent sensing materials, laboratory-based optical measurements, and systematic evaluation of sensor performance in complex nutrient matrices. The project aims to develop practical, real-time sensing approaches relevant to agriculture and environmental monitoring.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Chemical Engineering or related disciplines.
• Careful and systematic in laboratory work.
• Reliable and able to follow experimental protocols.
• Willing to learn and work independently after training.

Preferred

• Prior experience with polymers, carbon nanotubes or sensors.
• Proficiency in data analysis tools (Excel, Origin, Python, etc)
• Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques (fluorescence, Raman, UV-Vis spectrophotometry)
• Wet lab experience in handling and preparation of chemicals and polymers.

Responsibilities:

• Synthesis and characterization of polymer and sensor materials.
• Conducting optical measurements (fluorescence / absorbance) for metal ion detection.
• Systematic testing of sensor response to micronutrients.
• Recording, organising, and analysing experimental data.
• Assisting with optimisation of experimental protocols and repeatability studies.
• Assisting with the set-up and basic upkeep of laboratory equipment.
• Providing support to other related projects in the lab when required
