Research Assistant/Associate

Senior / Research Assistant (AI/ML & Software)

This position provides software and AI/ML engineering skills to support research and development in agentic workflows, applied machine learning, and the commercialisation of deep-technology research. The role supports technology commercialisation grants and works closely with the Principal Investigator and project partners to take prototypes toward working, deployable systems.

The key responsibilities are:

• Design, build and ship AI/ML and software prototypes and tools, with an emphasis on agentic and LLM-based workflows.
• Develop and maintain data pipelines, services and deployments across cloud and edge, taking prototypes from concept to working systems.
• Support applied computer vision development for project use cases as required.
• Support technology commercialisation grants, including building proofs of concept and demonstrators for industry and grant partners.
• Assist in preparing technical materials, proposals and reports 

Required/Desired Skills:

Technical skills in many of the following:

• Strong software engineering and the ability to build and ship end to end (e.g. Python, APIs, containerisation, and cloud services such as AWS).
• Experience building agentic and LLM-based workflows (e.g. RAG, tool use, multi-agent orchestration).
• Working knowledge of applied machine learning; familiarity with computer vision models (e.g. object detection and tracking) is an advantage.
• Familiarity with deployment and MLOps practices (e.g. Docker, CI/CD, model serving); edge deployment is a plus.

This position must be resourceful, proactive and results-oriented. The position must take initiative to engage stakeholders across research and commercialisation projects. A positive attitude, and the ability to present and communicate well with all types of stakeholders, will be essential.

Required/Desired Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related relevant field.
• Demonstrated experience (3-5 years preferred) building and shipping software or AI/ML systems in industry or research.
• Candidates with extensive experience and relevant qualifications will be considered for a senior role.
