We are looking for a Research Fellow to support research and development activities in advanced power electronics and energy systems. The role involves the design, development, control, and experimental validation of high-efficiency power electronic converters, including solid-state transformers and advanced power-delivery architectures for data centres. The technologies developed may also support renewable energy integration, energy storage, DC distribution, and smart-grid applications. The Research Fellow will contribute to project execution, research proposal preparation, industry collaboration, and the dissemination of research outcomes through technical reports, publications, and presentations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and development in power electronic converters, solid-state transformers, data-centre power-delivery systems, converter control, and energy systems.

  • Design, model, simulate, and develop advanced power electronic converter topologies and associated control algorithms.

  • Investigate high-efficiency and high-power-density power-conversion architectures for data-centre power delivery, DC distribution, renewable energy integration, energy storage, and grid-connected applications.

  • Support the development of solid-state transformer technologies, including converter topology design, control, protection, system integration, and performance evaluation.

  • Design and build laboratory-scale power converter prototypes, control platforms, and associated hardware systems.

  • Perform experimental testing, data acquisition, data analysis, and evaluation of system efficiency, power density, reliability, and dynamic performance.

  • Develop simulation and system-level models using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSCAD, or equivalent software.

  • Support the integration and testing of power electronic converters, magnetic components, sensors, control systems, and laboratory hardware.

  • Contribute to research proposal preparation, including literature reviews, technical writing, development of research concepts, and preparation of work plans.

  • Prepare technical reports, project documentation, research publications, and conference presentations.

  • Collaborate with faculty members, research staff, graduate students, external collaborators, and industry partners.

  • Support the supervision and technical guidance of graduate students, undergraduate students, and research assistants when required.

  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures and support the proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Job Requirements

  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Strong background in power electronic converter design, modelling, modulation, and control.

  • Knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred:

    • Solid-state transformers;

    • Data-centre power-delivery architectures;

    • High-frequency and high-power-density power conversion;

    • DC distribution systems;

    • Wide-bandgap semiconductor-based converters;

    • Renewable energy and energy storage systems.

  • Experience with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSCAD, or equivalent software.

  • Experience in power converter hardware design, prototyping, control implementation, laboratory testing, and experimental validation is preferred.

  • Familiarity with digital control platforms, power semiconductor devices, magnetic components, protection systems, or thermal management would be advantageous.

  • A good research publication record in power electronics or a related area is preferred.

  • Prior experience in research proposal writing, technical grant preparation, or industry-funded research projects would be advantageous.

Competencies

  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability to independently develop and execute research activities.

  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary research team and collaborate with academic and industry partners.

  • Good technical writing, presentation, and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple research activities, project deliverables, and deadlines.

  • Strong interest in high-efficiency power conversion, solid-state transformers, data-centre power delivery, and sustainable energy technologies.

  • Commitment to high-quality research, experimental rigour, and laboratory safety.
