Job Description - Research Fellow (Biomaterials)

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) provides a vibrant and nurturing environment for staff and students to carry out inter-disciplinary research in key areas such as Computational Materials Science, Characterisation Materials Science, Defence Composite Materials, Functional Composite Materials, Energy, Nanomaterials, Low Dimensional Materials, Biomaterials Materials, Biological Materials, Bioinspired Materials and Sustainable Materials.

The Translational Materials Innovation Group, led by Professor Nam-Joon Cho, has world-leading expertise in multiple research areas, such as antimicrobial strategies, lipid membrane platforms, membrane-active compounds, antibacterial and antiviral applications, plant-based bio-material applications, etc.

Key Job Purpose:

We are looking for a Research Fellow to work under the Principal Investigator to support research work for engineering sporopollenin-based drug delivery and cell culture technologies. The candidate should have strong experience in bio-interfacial science, drug encapsulation and delivery, antimicrobial materials, anchorage-dependent cell culture, biomaterials and tissue engineering. Candidates, with experience in cell biology, neuroscience, nanoencapsulation and lipid nanoparticle research, and polymer chemistry will be considered first.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary objective will be to plan, monitor, and perform experiments within the scope of the assigned research project, which include collection, analysis and interpretation of data. Additional duties will include training and collaboration with research staff and students.


Job responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Design and characterization of broad-spectrum lipid, peptide, and glycan-based mitigants

  • 3-D scaffold fabrication using new biomaterials and characterization of the same

  • Design, post-processing, and biomimetic cell culture environments for 3D scaffolds

  • Scalability and reproducibility of bioactive 3D scaffolds for large-scale manufacturing

  • Critical interpretation and application of experimental results

  • Collect and prepare data/ information/ proposal required for research-related grant call process

  • Gather information/ data and prepare documents for reporting/ papers

  • Assist in and deliver training new team members with relevant laboratory/ technical skills

Job Requirements: Required educational qualification, experience, skills and competencies

  • Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering/Materials Science/Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or related field

  • Knowledge :

    • Possess intermediate to advanced knowledge of biocompatible materials

    • Familiar with latest progress in delivery system including microfluidic devices

    • Materials Science and Chemistry

  • Experience :

    • Experienced in wet laboratory techniques, particularly in fabrication techniques for functional materials in micro- or nano- scale.

    • Experienced in conducting qualitative/quantitative characterization using state-of-the-art techniques including, but not limited to, lipid nanoparticle via microfluidics and biocompatible micro/nanoparticles.

  • Skills:

    • Highly adept in micro/nanoparticle fabrication based on biocompatible materials, fabrication techniques such as microfluidics.

    • Excellent laboratory management, communication, and organizational skills

  • Competencies

    • Strong motivation to publish

    • Highly innovative and forward-thinking

    • Able to work independently and within teams

    • Dedicated and able to meet deadlines
