Job Description - Research Fellow (Electrochemistry)

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) provides a vibrant and nurturing environment for staff and students to carry out inter-disciplinary research in key areas such as Computational Materials Science, Characterisation Materials Science, Defence Composite Materials, Functional Composite Materials, Energy, Nanomaterials, Low Dimensional Materials, Biomaterials Materials, Biological Materials, Bioinspired Materials and Sustainable Materials.

For more details, please view https://www.ntu.edu.sg/mse/research.

We are seeking a research fellow to contribute to the Center's work on battery electrochemistry under extreme conditions. The role involves electrolyte design, in-situ characterization, and building standardized multimodal datasets for AI-driven optimization of electrochemical processes. The successful candidate will bridge experimental electrochemistry and data-driven modelling within a collaborative, multi-institutional research framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and evaluate electrolyte systems for lithium-ion batteries operating under extreme conditions (wide temperature range, high voltage), with emphasis on solvation chemistry and interfacial electrochemistry.

  • Develop and apply in-situ characterization techniques to study electrochemical reaction kinetics and interfacial phenomena.

  • Build and curate standardized multimodal datasets (numerical, spectral, image) of battery electrochemistry to support the development of AI models within the Center.

  • Contribute to the development and reformulation of physics-based electrochemical models (e.g., pseudo-2D models) for integration into knowledge-integrated AI frameworks.

  • Publish research findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences

  • Assist in manuscript preparation, conference presentations, grant development, and reporting to funding agencies and collaborators.

  • Mentor junior researchers and students, and support general laboratory management, procurement and equipment coordination where required.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in materials science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related discipline.

  •  Strong research track record in electrolyte design, interfacial electrochemistry, or lithium battery systems, demonstrated by publications in top-tier journals

  • Hands-on experience with in-situ electrochemical characterization techniques

  •  Familiarity with solvation chemistry, electric double layer theory, and electrochemical modelling is highly desirable.

  • Experience with or willingness to engage in data-driven approaches (e.g., structured dataset curation, collaboration with AI/ML researchers) is an advantage.

  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional research environment.

We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
