Research Fellow (Land Use Construction and Downscaling)

Assistant Professor Yanyan Cheng’s research group is seeking a Research Fellow with a demonstrated ability to deliver high quality research outputs in a timely manner. This position is part of a Singapore NRF funded research project hosted by ASE. The Research Fellow will contribute to advancing research in Earth system modeling and to improve understanding of interactions among land, water, carbon, energy, atmosphere, ecosystems, and human systems.

This is a one-year appointment and potentially renewable based on performance and funding availability.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop remote-sensing and geospatial datasets for monitoring land-use change and environmental systems.

• Integrate satellite observations, ancillary geospatial data, and AI-based approaches for analyzing land, water, carbon, and ecosystem dynamics.

• Conduct spatial and temporal analyses of agricultural expansion, land-cover change, and associated environmental risks in Southeast Asia and other regions.

• Participate in mentoring Research Assistants/Associates and students at ASE.

Job Requirements:

• A PhD in Land resource management and remote sensing related field.

• Demonstrated research experience in agricultural remote sensing, including the mapping of annual crop systems and perennial plantation systems using satellite observations.

• Experience in long-term and large-area land-use or land-cover mapping, including the development and application of time-series remote-sensing methods.

• Familiar with land-use change, agricultural expansion, and related environmental processes, including carbon, water, ecosystem, or climate impacts.

• Proficiency in programming and geospatial analysis skills, preferably including Google Earth Engine, Python, and GIS software.

• Strong quantitative and analytical skills in working with satellite observations, geospatial datasets, and environmental data.

• As the position requires collaboration and scientific communication in English, the candidate should have good written and oral communication skills in English.

• Should have demonstrated a strong publication record in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals in remote sensing, land-use science, environmental sustainability, or related fields.

• Prior experience in nationally funded or major collaborative research projects related to climate change, agricultural land systems, soil and water environments, farmland quality, soil health, soil organic carbon, water use, or groundwater resources would be advantageous.

• Strong enthusiasm for research, with the ability to work independently and a positive, collaborative spirit in interdisciplinary teamwork.
