Job Description - Senior Officer / Manager (Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation) - Contract

[What the role is]

The Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster of NParks, safeguards the health and welfare of animals through comprehensive and integrated programmes and works closely with partners in the veterinary and animal-related industries to strengthen capacities and enhance competencies in animal health and welfare. It is the main touch-point on animal and veterinary matters in Singapore and the first responder for all animal-related feedback.

The Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation provides veterinary care and rehabilitation for wild animals in Singapore and builds NParks’ expertise in the rescue, treatment and release of wildlife. It also enhances NParks’ biosurveillance and wildlife population research capabilities and is key to our science- and community-based approach to wildlife management and conservation.

[What you will be working on]

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation team under the Wildlife Management Division. You will lead a team of veterinary nurses, with a focus on wildlife veterinary nursing, care and rehabilitation, this position will also be involved in the support of the centre’s logistical and administrative operations.

  • Lead the veterinary nursing team in providing supportive care of wildlife, such as treatment and handfeeding; including proactively identifying and developing solutions for operational gaps.

  • Assist and support veterinarians in veterinary examination, procedures, medication of wildlife, and maintenance of animal health records.

  • Assist veterinarians with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients including upkeep of clinic, surgical preparation, anaesthesia monitoring, movement of animals and recovery.

  • Supervise the daily care and well-being of animals, including feeding, husbandry of animals.

  • Plan and implement enrichment and rehabilitation programmes for various wildlife species to uphold animal welfare and prepare patients for release back into the wild.

  • Create and maintain species-appropriate housing for wildlife patients, including but not limited to creating enrichment devices and enclosure refurbishment.

  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders such as parks managers to explore opportunities to enhance care, rehabilitation and release plans.

  • Assist with daily centre administrative and logistical operations, including maintenance of animal records, equipment and inventory management, using computer systems where necessary.

[What we are looking for]

  • Areas of study in Veterinary Technology / Veterinary Bioscience or any other relevant discipline

  • At least 5 years of relevant working experience is preferred, e.g. in an animal-related organization

  • Competent in Microsoft Office systems, particularly Excel

  • Competent in the care of juvenile animals, particularly birds and mammals

  • Independent and able to work effectively with others in a team environment

  • Able to work after-hours, on weekends and/or public holidays based on ad hoc requirements

  • Leadership and team management skills

  • Positive attitude, good communication and interpersonal skills
