Job Description - Senior Research Fellow (Human Factors / Human-Computer Interaction / Engineering / Computer Science)

ATMRI at NTU is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Fellow to conduct research in Human Factors, Human-AI Teaming, and Human-Centred AI for next-generation Digital Air Traffic Controller (ATCO) Assistant systems. The role is responsible for leading the design, development, and evaluation of Human-AI collaboration solutions through human-in-the-loop experimentation, usability evaluation, and user-centred methodologies. Working closely with AI researchers, engineers, operational stakeholders, and aviation experts, the candidate will contribute to the development of adaptive, trustworthy, and effective AI systems for safety-critical air traffic management environments, supporting ATMRI's mission to advance aviation innovation and digital transformation.

The role also includes contributing to high-impact publications, engaging with industry and regulatory stakeholders, mentoring junior researchers and students, and supporting project delivery and reporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead human factors research for the design, development, and evaluation of AI-enabled ATCO Assistant systems.

  • Design and conduct human-in-the-loop (HITL) experiments to assess controller performance, workload, situational awareness, trust, and acceptance of AI-assisted decision support tools.

  • Develop user-centred interfaces and interaction paradigms that facilitate effective Human-AI collaboration in operational ATM environments.

  • Define human factors requirements, evaluation metrics, and validation protocols for Digital ATCO Assistant functionalities.

  • Investigate cognitive processes and controller behaviours to support personalized and adaptive AI assistance.

  • Conduct usability studies and experimental analyses using quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

  • Collaborate closely with AI, machine learning, and software engineering teams to translate operational requirements into deployable human-centred solutions.

  • Engage with operational stakeholders, including air traffic controllers, ANSPs, and regulators, to gather requirements and validate developed solutions.

  • Contribute to safety, explainability, trustworthiness, and human oversight considerations for AI applications in air traffic management.

  • Disseminate research outcomes through technical reports, journal publications, conference papers, demonstrations, and stakeholder presentations.

  • Support project management activities, including experiment planning, data collection, documentation, and coordination with project partners.

  • Mentor junior researchers and students involved in human factors and Human-AI teaming activities within the project.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.

  • Experience in Human-AI Teaming, Human-Automation Interaction, or Human-Centred AI, preferably in safety-critical systems.

  • Proven ability to design and conduct Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) experiments, usability studies, and human factors evaluations.

  • Strong analytical and data analysis skills, with experience in experimental design and statistical analysis tools.

  • Proven track record of high-quality publications in reputable venues.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and engage with external and international stakeholders.

  • Prior experience in Air Traffic Management (ATM), Air Traffic Control (ATC), or aviation is an advantage.
