Job Description - Underwriter - Credit and Political Risk

Job Description

We are looking for an Underwriter who can be responsible for originating, underwriting and monitoring a diversified portfolio of credit and political risk insurance exposures across Asia Pacific. In this role you will work as part of an experienced global underwriting team to originate, underwrite and manage a portfolio of risks in accordance with a defined risk framework and global risk appetite. The role requires the ability to apply creative underwriting judgement to evolving economic and geopolitical conditions, structuring practical insurance solutions that create value for customers and the portfolio.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
  • Originate and develop business opportunities for the team by building relationships with key brokers, banks and institutional clients across APAC, generating a diversified pipeline of credit and political risk opportunities.
  • Formulate independent risk opinions and underwriting recommendations on corporate and sovereign risk transactions following in-depth credit and geopolitical analysis.
  • Underwrite transactions in line with risk appetite, underwriting guidelines and delegated authorities, with clear accountability for underwriting decisions taken.
  • Contribute actively to peer review discussions, challenging assumptions and supporting robust risk selection.
  • Liaise with the catastrophe management team to assess portfolio accumulation, stress scenarios and aggregation risk.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, concentration and diversification, ensuring early identification of deteriorating risks.
  • Support business planning, forecasting and portfolio strategy processes.
  • Work collaboratively with the claims team and internal legal counsel to manage claims, workouts and restructurings.
  • Provide underwriting insight and transaction knowledge to support effective resolution outcomes.
  • Be accountable for the various activities with respect to all underwriting decisions made, including operational compliance, effective risk analysis, legal wording review and exposure/aggregate management.
  • Contribute to the ongoing growth and development of the wider team through sharing of experience, coaching and guiding other team members.
  • This role will require travel for business purposes across the Asia region.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience
  • University degree ideally in Finance/Business or any related subject; or recognised financial qualification, such as the CFA, ACCA, or CIMA would be desirable;
  • Minimum 7 years experience working as a credit or financial analyst in a major financial institution or other comparable organisation.
  • Ability to network and develop trusted relationships across the region and industries.
  • Strong technical knowledge and skills in the class of business, practical experience with legal documentation is also preferred.
  • Aware of and actively engaged with trends within the regional market and global economy
  • Excellent statistical/analytical skills utilised to interrogate and interpret data
  • Strong analytical, numerical and commercial skills, with the ability to assess complex credit structures, country risk dynamics and political risk exposures.
  • Well developed negotiation, stakeholder management and communication skills, with confidence engaging brokers, clients and internal stakeholders at senior levels.
  • Strong IT literacy, including use of underwriting systems, portfolio analytics, exposure monitoring tools and management information to support disciplined underwriting and risk oversight.
