Java and Python Engineer

Company Overview

This role is for a Software Engineer within the Software Engineering Team at MARVES, a Zurich-based Wealth Management technology firm. You will work across Java and Python stacks to build high-quality applications, tackle complex legacy defects, and deliver robust solutions for Wealth Management systems.

Job Summary

This Software Engineer role involves developing and delivering high-quality Java and Python applications for Wealth Management systems. You will resolve complex legacy defects, ensure system stability, and collaborate with stakeholders to drive technical solutions and project success.

Responsibilities

• Communicate complex technical issues clearly to non-technical audiences to facilitate understanding and decision-making
• Solve challenging legacy defects that require advanced problem-solving skills beyond typical developer capabilities
• Develop and deliver scalable, stable applications using Java, EJB, Spring Boot, MySQL, Oracle, IBM MQ, and Python scripting for automation and data processing
• Translate business and system requirements into fit-for-purpose technical solutions that meet performance and security standards
• Design, develop, and implement custom-built applications across Java and Python environments
• Create Python scripts and services to support data pipelines, automation, reporting, and system integration tasks
• Collaborate effectively within Agile teams using Scrum and Extreme Programming methodologies, applying Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) best practices
• Investigate and resolve production issues promptly to maintain system stability and performance under pressure
• Analyze project requirements, estimate effort, plan timelines, and manage progress to meet key milestones
• Build strong project teams and maintain robust communication to ensure stakeholder awareness, involvement, and support throughout project lifecycles
• Lead technical and architectural design reviews, enforce architectural guidelines, and challenge existing approaches to improve solutions
• Demonstrate integrity, due care, diligence, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and risk management policies
• Identify and manage risks and issues proactively, driving stakeholders to deliver quality results on time

Required competencies and certifications

• Proficient in Core Java 8+ and JUnit for unit testing
• Experienced with Spring Boot and core Spring concepts for application development
• Skilled in Python scripting for automation, data processing, REST API integration, and tooling development
• Strong foundation in computer science principles including algorithms, data structures, object-oriented and functional design
• Competent in Test-Driven Development (TDD) to write and maintain acceptance tests in Java and Python
• Familiar with Maven, Git, IntelliJ, SonarQube, and SonarLint for build, version control, and code quality management
• Knowledgeable in Java Messaging concepts including JMS and IBM MQ
• Experienced with relational databases (Oracle, MySQL), including SQL, joins, indexes, triggers, and query optimization
• Skilled in Web Services development and consumption using REST and SOAP protocols
• Basic proficiency in Linux shell scripting

Preferred competencies and qualifications

• Experience with Kafka messaging system
• Familiarity with JBOSS or other application servers
• Knowledge of Java Server Faces (JSF), JPA, and EJB frameworks
• Experience with React JS for front-end development
• Ability to write and understand complex SQL queries
• Preferably experienced in finance or banking domain
