Principal / Lead Data Migration Architect

About the Role

We are looking for a Principal / Lead Data Migration Architect to drive the data migration strategy for a large-scale enterprise platform transformation. This role will lead the migration of complex legacy systems to a modern cloud-native platform, ensuring data integrity, business continuity, and seamless delivery throughout the transformation journey.

Working closely with architects, engineering teams, product managers, and business stakeholders, you will define migration strategies, modernise legacy data models, and establish a scalable data foundation for future business capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and own the end-to-end data migration strategy for a large-scale enterprise platform modernisation.
• Analyse and reverse-engineer legacy database schemas, data models, and business rules built over many years.
• Design target data models aligned with modern cloud-native architectures.
• Develop phased migration approaches that minimise business disruption and operational risk.
• Lead data mapping, transformation, validation, reconciliation, and migration activities between legacy and target platforms.
• Ensure data quality, integrity, lineage, consistency, and traceability throughout the migration lifecycle.
• Design and implement migration tooling, ETL/ELT pipelines, and automated reconciliation frameworks.
• Establish data governance practices covering master data, reference data, and historical data management.
• Drive database optimisation, migration readiness, performance tuning, and cutover planning.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure business processes and operational workflows are successfully transitioned to the new platform.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in enterprise database architecture, large-scale data migration, or data platform engineering.
• Proven track record delivering complex legacy modernisation or platform transformation initiatives.
• Strong expertise with relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, DB2, or equivalent.
• Expert-level SQL skills and database performance optimisation experience.
• Strong knowledge of enterprise data modelling, including highly normalised transactional models.
• Hands-on experience designing ETL/ELT pipelines and migration frameworks.
• Experience with data validation, reconciliation, and migration quality assurance.
• Familiarity with Change Data Capture (CDC), replication technologies, and incremental migration strategies.
• Experience with cloud database platforms such as Amazon RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, or similar managed database services.
• Experience migrating large-scale transactional databases (multi-terabyte or larger).
• Strong understanding of operational systems supporting high-volume business transactions.

Preferred Experience

• Experience delivering complex enterprise platform transformation programmes.
• Knowledge of high-availability database architecture and disaster recovery strategies.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and streaming technologies such as Kafka.
• Understanding of microservices architectures and distributed data management.
• Experience delivering zero- or near-zero-downtime migrations.
• Familiarity with enterprise data governance, auditability, and compliance best practices.
