Software Engineer

General Description

This role is for a Software Engineer within the Software Engineering Team.

Key Responsibilities

Functional / Technical

• Communicate highly technical issues to non-technical audiences.

• Build a strong technical reputation within the organization by helping solve complex problems that others struggle to resolve.

• Develop and deliver solutions using Java, EJB, Spring Boot, MySQL, Oracle, and IBM MQ.

• Understand business system requirements and translate them into scalable, stable, and fit-for-purpose technical solutions.

• Analyse and resolve complex legacy system defects that require advanced troubleshooting skills.

• Ensure adherence to bank standards, including coding, security, and performance guidelines.

• Gain exposure to Wealth Management systems.

• Demonstrate a passion for technology and building robust, scalable Java applications.

• Perform analysis, design, coding, testing, and implementation of complex, custom-built applications.

• Collaborate effectively with the team to achieve project goals.

• Experience working in Agile methodologies such as Scrum and/or Extreme Programming (XP).

• Follow best practices such as Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Continuous Integration (CI).

• Investigate and resolve production issues to maintain a stable production environment while remaining calm and effective during critical incidents.

Client / Stakeholder Management (Internal & External)

• Analyse requirements, estimate effort, plan timelines, and manage project progress.

• Ensure stakeholder awareness, involvement, and support by building strong project teams and maintaining clear communication throughout the project lifecycle.

• Drive and review technical and architectural designs, enforce architectural standards, and challenge the status quo where appropriate.

Regulatory Responsibilities / Risk Management

• Demonstrate appropriate values and behaviours, including honesty, integrity, due care and diligence, fair dealing, conflict of interest management, professional competence, continuous development, effective risk management, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

• Take responsibility for identifying and managing risks and issues while driving all stakeholders to deliver on time and meet the required quality standards.

Skills Requirements

Professional Skills

• Well-organized with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

• Able to influence stakeholders and drive projects to achieve key milestones while overcoming challenges.

• Able to translate functional requirements into efficient and fit-for-purpose technical solutions.

• Preferably have experience in the finance or banking domain.

Technical Skills (Must Have)

• Core Java 8+ and JUnit.

• Spring Boot.

• Strong computer science knowledge, including algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented design.

• Test-Driven Development (TDD) with the ability to write acceptance tests.

• Maven.

• Basic Linux shell scripting commands.

• Java Messaging concepts (JMS, IBM MQ).

• Relational database concepts, including SQL, joins, indexes, triggers, and stored procedures.

• REST and SOAP Web Services.

• Spring Framework core concepts.

• Experience in SQL query optimization.

• Familiarity with IntelliJ IDEA, Git, SonarQube, and SonarLint.

Desirable Skills

• Experience with JBoss or other application servers.

• Knowledge of JavaServer Faces (JSF), JPA, and EJB.

• Ability to write and understand complex SQL queries.

• Apache Kafka.

• ReactJS.

• Good work ethics and punctuality.
