Job Description - School Adjunct Counsellor - Commonwealth - Part-Time

Contract Period: From 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2028 with an option to extend the Contract for a further period of two year (From 1 October 2028 to 30 September 2030).

Working hours:

School Terms
·    Mondays to Fridays: minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 4 days per week
·    8 hours of service provision, excluding lunchtime, between 9am to 6pm
·    May also be required to provide service for half a day, which is a 4-hour block
·    Service not required on weekends or public holidays unless in cases of emergency as determined by the school
·    In the event of an emergency requiring weekend or holiday services, provide the necessary support as requested by the school

Scope of Services:
1.      Shall provide individual, and when appropriate, family, and group counselling to students, addressing issues on mental health, emotional, social, academic, and behavioral challenges.
2.      Is to be able to deliver both online and in-person counselling services, adapting to the needs and preferences of the students and institutional requirements.
3.      For in-person counselling, sessions are to be conducted in the school at designated counselling rooms.
4.      Shall conduct up to 6 counselling sessions per day. Each counselling session may take between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the nature of the service provided. This includes walk-in consultations.
5.      Shall manage counselling cases with appropriate interventions and maintain consistent follow-up until case closure. Where cases are handed over due to discontinuation of service from the adjunct counsellor, a proper case handover is required.
6.      For crisis and high-risk cases, the adjunct counsellor shall implement a comprehensive case management and intervention protocol. This includes, where necessary, providing an immediate response, consulting with stakeholders, and referring them to external agencies.
7.      Is expected to offer consultation to lecturers, parents, and relevant stakeholders on the management of students seen in counselling, when appropriate.
8.      Shall maintain detailed and accurate case documentation for all counselling sessions and interventions. This includes progress notes, treatment plans, and follow-up actions. The adjunct counsellor shall ensure that the case documentation adheres to industry standards and the school’s requirements. The case documentation is to be updated in the school system by the next working day.
9.      Shall provide regular feedback to the school counselling team on student progress and key developments.
10.      Shall collaborate effectively with various stakeholders across the school to ensure comprehensive care for students.
11.      Is to participate in regular group clinical supervisions as arranged by the school counselling team.
12.      Should preferably have experience with designing and delivering workshops on well-being topics for students.
13.      Is to complete Annex C, to indicate any relevant experience with designing and delivering workshops on well-being topics for students.
14.      Shall participate in regular performance reviews conducted by the, to address any identified issues or areas for improvement in a timely and professional manner.

Qualifications, skills and experience:
1.       Must possess a master’s degree in counselling and/or Psychology, or equivalent.
2.       Shall have at least 2 years of relevant professional experience acquired within the last 6 years, preferably with the youth population (Individuals between 15 to 35 years of age). This includes, but is not limited to, experience in counselling and guidance, case management or social work, and crisis intervention. The counsellor should also be adept at working with individuals from various cultural and social backgrounds.
3.       Should have demonstrable experience in crisis intervention, including the ability to quickly assess, respond to, and manage critical situations that may arise in the student counselling context.
4.       Should demonstrate empathy and strong interpersonal skills necessary for building rapport in the counselling environment.
5.       Shall be proficient in both written and spoken English, as evidenced by clear report-writing abilities and effective communication skills with students and stakeholders.
6.       Should preferably participate in ongoing professional development activities relevant to youth mental health and well-being.
7.       Must attend an in-person interview as part of the selection process, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of their suitability for the position. Failure to attend the interview will result in being disqualified.
