The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 20-month contract at the Director’s Office.
Project Title: Testing the Reliability of AI-powered Tagging System to Foster Student Agency through Digital Portfolios
Project Introduction: With challenges from rapid changes in social, financial and political landscape surrounding the 21st Century teachers, Singapore's teachers undergo values based teacher preparation programmes in NIE that are underpinned by the Enhanced TE21 model. Within this model, the Enhanced V3SK model further describes the values, skills and competencies that are critical for the professional growth, teacher identity and development of Student Teachers (STs).
In NIE's teacher education programmes, the Professional Practice and Inquiry (PPI) course is pivotal in helping STs achieve professional growth through the NIE Digital Portfolio (DP) which allows STs to record and reflect upon their own holistic growth.
The added complexity brought about by transformative technologies such as AI, creates a research gap in understanding how AI-enabled tools embedded into DPs can augment learning, within the specific context of teacher education. Furthermore, studies on the benefits of DPs in the existing literature are often studied via learner perception, pointing to a need for different ways to study the aggregation of student learning other than relying solely on self-reporting. Hence, this research project examines how an AI-enabled tool within the DP can be tested for reliability to aggregate student teachers’ learning and attainment of competencies.
