Principal Engineer #Sb - Part-Time

Position Purpose

We are seeking a highly specialized Principal Silicon Photonics Integration Engineer to lead the development of our next-generation FMCW LiDAR optical engines. This role demands a unique blend of expertise spanning from foundry-level PIC design and hybrid laser integration to advanced optoelectronic packaging. You will be responsible for the entire product lifecycle—from the bottom-level physics of the chip to the final hermetic package and system optimization.

Key Responsibilities

• End-to-End PIC Development: Lead the design, simulation, and full-mask tape-out of high-performance PICs. Ensure seamless transition from GDSFactory/Python-based layouts to foundry DRC sign-off.
• FMCW Laser Design & Optimization: Develop high-power, narrow-linewidth hybrid III-V/SiN integrated lasers. Specifically, optimize chirp linearity and frequency modulation performance required for long-range LiDAR.
• Chip-to-Package Integration: Design robust packaging interfaces, including FAU/Edge coupler configurations and thermal isolation trenches to mitigate active-passive crosstalk.
• System Testing & Characterization: Establish testing protocols for wafer-level and package-level verification.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Microelectronics, Optoelectronics, Physics, or a related field with a focus on Integrated Photonics.
• Proven track record of Full-mask Tape-outs on commercial foundries
• Experienced in foundry process and platforms
• Proficiency in simulation suites: Lumerical, CST Microwave Studio.
• Deep understanding of photonics devices designs, such as Mach-Zehnder Modulators (MZM), Ring Resonators, and loop mirrors.
• High accountability, strategic thinking, and the ability to bridge the gap between academic innovation and commercial scalability.
