Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor position in the Department of Pharmacology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Established in 1959, the NUS Medicine Department of Pharmacology is a leading institution in Asia dedicated to advancing healthcare through innovative drug discovery and world-class education. The Department is committed to improving patient care by developing innovative therapies and pushing the boundaries of medical discovery. The successful candidate will join a newly established research program led by Prof. Tao Wei in the areas of biomaterials, nanomedicines, drug delivery, gene and cell therapy, and translational therapeutics. The appointment will be made on a three-year contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal, subject to performance and institutional needs.

Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant Professor will be responsible for developing and leading research projects that advance the department and research program’s scientific directions in biomaterials, nanomedicine, drug delivery, and advanced biotherapeutics. The successful candidate will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator as a founding member to contribute to the establishment and growth of the new research laboratory. Key responsibilities include developing independent and collaborative research directions, supporting ongoing projects and competitive grant applications, publishing high-quality research, mentoring junior researchers, and promoting translational and interdisciplinary research activities within NUSMed.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Assistant Professor will be accountable to the Principal Investigator and will be able to:

  1. Work closely with the PI and the team members in setting up the new laboratory and research programs in cell and gene therapy and supporting the development of research platforms, standard operating procedures, experimental workflows, and collaborative research activities;
  2. assist the PI to oversee the general management of the ongoing projects in the team
  3. develop and lead independent and collaborative research projects in biomaterials, nanomedicine, drug delivery, gene/cell therapy, and translational therapeutics, with contributions to the team’s research proposals and reports;
  4. provide necessary support to the team, such as mentoring and supervising students, research assistants, research fellows, and junior team members in experimental design, data analysis, research conduct, and manuscript preparation;
  5. maintain the highest standards of professional conduct and record keeping in accordance with institutional policies and procedures;
  6. assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the PI.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Hold a PhD or MD in medicine-related fields or other cross-field for medical applications, and have at least 3 years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience;
  2. have strong research expertise in one or more of the following areas: biomaterials, nanomedicine, drug delivery, RNA/gene delivery, cell therapy, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, translational therapeutics, or related biomedical fields;
  3. have a strong publication record in relevant fields, preferably including first-author, co-first-author, corresponding-author, or senior-author publications;
  4. Have experience in, and/or strong potential for, grant writing, research proposal development, intellectual property development, and translational research;
  5. have experience managing research projects and/or junior researchers, with prior experience in a junior faculty, instructor, or equivalent research leadership role preferred;
  6. be able to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and translational research environment involving scientists, engineers, clinicians, and other research professionals.
