Job Description

Join a World-Leading Centre in Bioethics

The Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), invites applications for a Research Fellow position. Recognised internationally for excellence in bioethics research and education, CBmE is home to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of scholars working across philosophy, medicine, public policy, law, and the social sciences.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team led by leading scholars in bioethics and moral philosophy, including Professor Julian Savulescu, Professor Brian D. Earp, and Professor Dominic Wilkinson (University of Oxford). This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on ethical theory and its application to contemporary societal challenges.

The Research Project

The Research Fellow will examine the nature of Collective Reflective Equilibrium in Practice (Savulescu J, Gyngell C, Kahane G. Collective Reflective Equilibrium in Practice (CREP) and controversial novel technologies. Bioethics. 2021 Sep;35(7):652-663. doi: 10.1111/bioe.12869.), its theoretical justification, objections to it, its practical import and its role in addressing deep value disagreement.

The successful candidate will work closely with a team of philosophers, bioethicists, clinicians, legal scholars, and social scientists. While the broader project includes empirical work aimed at understanding public values, experience in empirical research is not required for this position, and candidates whose expertise lies primarily in normative, practical, or applied ethics are strongly encouraged to apply. The candidate also has potential opportunities for  research visits and collaborative activities in both Singapore and Oxford, subject to project needs and funding availability.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • A PhD (or be close to completion) in Bioethics, Practical or Applied Ethics, Normative Ethics, Philosophy, or a closely related discipline.
  • A strong track record of publication, or demonstrated potential for publication, in leading Quartile One bioethics, philosophy, or related journals.
  • Expertise in ethical methodology, particularly in areas relevant to reflective equilibrium, moral reasoning, or normative analysis.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team.

The following are advantageous but not required:

  • Experience with empirical bioethics or qualitative and quantitative social science methods.

Join us in driving impactful bioethics research and helping to shape global conversations about ethics, public values, and responsible decision-making.
