Senior/ Executive Meteorologist (Forecast Application Development Dept) - Part-Time

[What the role is]

The Forecast Application Development Department develops tools, products and services to support weather monitoring and forecast operations at Meteorological Service Singapore. The Department’s work involves analysing weather radar and environmental satellite data, post-processing numerical weather predictions and developing data-driven models to improve weather nowcasts and forecasts. To fulfil its mission, the Department also participates in stakeholder engagement and research collaboration activities.

We are looking for experienced individuals to develop and implement innovative weather solutions to support operational weather services, specialised stakeholder/user sectors and the public. The role requires deep meteorological expertise (in areas such as Numerical/AI Weather Prediction and specialised meteorological observing systems) as well as the ability to apply methods in related disciplines such as data science, geographic information systems and software development. You will work with users to translate their requirements for weather services into operational products and services. You will also have opportunities to participate in international conferences and seminars.

[What you will be working on]

You will be working in a fast-paced environment that would require the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders at the same time. The job scope includes:

• Engaging stakeholder groups, e.g., in the field of aviation and marine services, as well as government agencies, to understand their specialised domain requirements and propose suitable meteorological solutions.
• Analysing data from physics-based and AI/ML weather prediction models and meteorological observation systems and undertaking studies to improve the reliability of forecast products and services.
• Designing and developing meteorological products for users, or for integration with their systems.
• Directing the work of research performers.
• Developing software applications to operationalise the generation and delivery of weather products and services.
• Providing advice on meteorological data and applications to users.

[What we are looking for]

The job might be for you if you possess:

• Postgraduate qualification in Meteorology
• Good understanding of numerical weather prediction and specialised meteorological observing systems
• 3 years’ experience in developing weather forecast products and services
• Experience in working with remote sensing data
• Knowledge in statistical packages or machine learning/deep learning algorithms
• Experience in stakeholder engagement
• General proficiency in Information Technology
• Working experience in scientific programming and application development
• Good command of spoken and written English and excellent communication skills
• Ability to work with others as well as independently
