Role: Systems Engineer (Sensors/IoT)

Job Description

We are looking for Systems Engineers to join the Information Technology Division to implement and manage deliver IoT / OT systems and associated data transformation solutions that support critical environmental monitoring projects.

As a Systems Engineer, you will design, integrate, implement and manage IoT/OT systems that connect to environmental sensors, process telemetric data, and provide essential data services for government operations whilst disseminating vital environmental information to the public. This role is primarily responsible for the implementation and operation of ICT and IoT systems that serve the agency's core environmental protection mission.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for developing and maintaining robust IoT/OT infrastructure that enables real-time environmental monitoring across Singapore. This includes integrating diverse sensor networks, ensuring reliable data collection and processing, and creating scalable solutions that support client's environmental protection initiatives. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver systems that enhance Singapore's environmental monitoring capabilities.

• Collaborate, implement and maintain IoT systems and edge to deliver seamless integration between sensor hardware, edge and backend systems using relevant protocols (e.g. MQTT, RabbitMQ, AMQP, HTTPS REST API, CoAP, etc.)

• Perform hardware-software integration testing and validation

• Create and conduct comprehensive unit and integration system test cases

• Perform impact analysis for change request (e.g. sensor upgrade with additional parameters)

• Create and maintain documentation for hardware setup, configuration, and troubleshooting procedures

• Develop, and deploy backend cloud services in both serverless and serverful architecture

• Manage and update infrastructure and oversee the management and maintenance of backend resources

• Set up secure role-based access controls

• Set up system monitoring and alerts, with notifications via short messaging or email

• Perform ongoing code maintenance and develop new features to enhance functionalities for the users

• Design and develop frontend for IoT data transformation solutions connecting with backend services

• Develop and maintain API documentation using OpenAPI

• Troubleshoot and resolve system issues as they arise to ensure system reliability

• Enhance system performance for speed, scalability, and cost-effectiveness

• Apply cybersecurity measures for system hygiene and data protection

• Communicate effectively with management and stakeholders to align technical solutions with business objectives

• Engage with end users to gather feedback and ensure systems delivered meet user needs

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical and electronics engineering or equivalent

• At least 2 years of development, implementation and/or maintenance of sensor-related systems/platforms in production environment

• At least 1 year of sensor / IoT device integration as part of the IoT / OT system implementation

• Experience in deployment, maintenance and integration of IoT / OT systems would be an advantage, including AWS IoT Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, industrial protocols (RS-485, Modbus RTU, ModbusTCP), interoperability standards (OPC-UA), embedded protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN), edge computing and embedded systems integration.

• Proficient in programming and scripting such as C++, Python, .Net, Java etc.

• Experience in serverless computing platforms (e.g. Lambda) or container technologies / orchestration (e.g. Docker) would be an advantage

• Good working knowledge of DevOps in hybrid cloud setup

• Strong technical aptitude, including excellent troubleshooting and communications skills

• Strong interest in emerging IoT and OT technologies, with the ability to proactively and independently acquire technical skills through on-the-job exposure

• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and complex work environment

• Relevant industry certification in systems engineering would be an advantage
