Prostate cancer is the 3rd most common cause of cancer amongst Singaporean men. Globally, approximately 5 million biopsies are performed annually and approximately 1 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The common method for prostate cancer diagnosis is a trans-rectal biopsy. As the rectum stores fecal matter, when biopsy punctures are made in the rectum wall, patients are susceptible to an infection rate of as high as 5%. This affects about 250,000 men globally. Costs of infection to the healthcare system is enormous due to re-admissions and follow up treatments, and deaths may occur if infections are not treated quickly.

Biobot Surgical’s iSR’obot Mona Lisa is a robotic platform that allows clinicians to mark out suspicious lesions using the proprietary planning software and imaging techniques fusing MRI and Ultrasound images. Subsequently, the robot takes over fully to position the needle guide to allow clinicians to fire off the biopsy needle to reach the intended target accurately via the perineum region located externally below the scrotum. Excellent coverage of the prostate is achieved with only 2 external skin punctures. The combination of robotic positioning and clear imaging techniques increase the chances of detecting early stage and aggressive cancer.
